The Concert Uncanny

Unreal Engine video

This work is the research in progress about the uncanny experience in reality. This work is the preliminary experiment of uncanny subject, which is inspired by my personal experience.

I was once seriously disturbed by the light cough and clothes rubbing sound in the audience during a concert that this light, yet consistent bit of disturbance had gradually made me feel the intolerable unease had taken over my attention. I observed that my body also turned on a physical “Defense mechanism” as I started to sweat and was in a heightened sense of vigilance.

I attribute this uncanny experience in concert hall to repressed desires and anxieties from early childhood. Intellectual education, along with socialization systems often impose rules and norms during maturation that shape individuals' understanding of acceptable and unacceptable thoughts and behaviors. Intellectual practice is inherent in the transformation from the instinct of inclinations to being trained to rationality.  This can contribute to the repression of certain desires, conflicts, or anxieties that exist in childhood psyche.

Therefore, the disturbance in a regulated public situations like concerts automatically rouse the childhood behaviour, and the education upon it which have been internalized in our mind.

I used Metahuman and Unreal Engine technique to reconstruct the circumstance and link my face expression to the virtual human model through camera.
